“How Do Incompetent People Rise To The Top?”
As positive as I am, and as much as I like to believe that if
you're talented and hard-working you'll get ahead... the truth is
that in some cases incompetent people really do rise to the top!
These are the people who, on an objective analysis, don't have
the skills, knowledge, work ethic or other qualities necessary
to do a particular job well.
The people who would normally fall flat on their faces... if it
wasn't for the fact that they somehow "get away with" their
incompetence.
So how do such people get to well respected, highly paid, and
sometimes rather powerful positions?
You probably know the answer.
Which is... that such people are actually HIGHLY competent.
NOT competent in the actual job they've landed... but competent
in the GAME that people in their company or organization must
play in order to rise through the ranks.
Let's face it, in many - if not most - organizations, there's the business game (which is all about the work of the organization)
... and the political game (which is all about the hunt for
titles, personal rewards and power within the organization).
If the politics overshadows the business, then it's the people
who are masters of the political game who will rise to the most
prestigious, highest paid and most powerful positions within the
organization... rather than those who might actually be the most
competent.
So what do you do if you're in an organization where the
political game dominates?
You have four choices:
1. Accept the game but don't participate.
2. Join the game.
3. Change the (rules of the) game.
4. Leave the game (i.e. quit and move to another organization).
If you choose #1, you may have to accept being overlooked for
promotions and rewards. Unfortunately, doing a good job just
won't be enough. But if you choose #2, you may have to compromise
your own values and ethics.
I suggest you opt for #3 and #4, in that order.
By all means, see if you can change the game. You may, in fact,
be helped along by market forces. Companies that let internal
politics interfere with business don't last long.
If you have some degree of influence, you can try to make others
aware of the growing competitiveness in your industry and the
need to improve internal practices.
You may even be in a position where you can influence the hiring
and firing, so that more business-oriented people end up joining
the organization, while those who are incompetent and political
end up leaving.
But in some cases, you'll just be trying to swim against the
current. Some organizations are so entrenched in the political
game that the opportunity cost of you spending so much time and
energy trying to change things - while foregoing better
opportunities elsewhere - is just too great.
In that case, I reckon you should jump ship to an organization
that will value your business and work skills over your political
skills.
Now, I don't deny that politics plays a role in every
organization. Basically, as soon as there's more than one
person... there's politics. And let's face it, political skills
are always going to impact someone's climb up that career ladder.
But when political skills severely outweigh business skills... that's when "incompetent people rise to the top"... and when YOU
are well advised to consider your options.

“How To Get Up In the Morning... When You'd Really Rather
Sleep In”
I've been getting up early for years. I currently get up at around 5.30 am in the morning most days. But if you think I'm a "morning person" - think again!
I'd love to sleep in! But with a busy schedule and family responsibilities, the early morning is the only time I can get my exercise routine in without any chance of interruption.
Staying fit is important to me, so I'm prepared to get up early
to ensure I get my exercise in.
So how do I get up so early... and how can YOU get up early if
you need to?
Here's my no.1 tip: set your alarm at the required time... and
when that alarm rings... get up straight away!
Don't give yourself the chance to debate over whether or not to
get up... don't press that "snooze" button... and certainly
don't tell yourself that you'll get up "in a minute". Get up
immediately.
Otherwise, you'll probably end up staying in bed!

“What's The Best Treatment For Menopause?”
Well, according to a study on the Australian Nine Network tele- vision show "What's Good For You" it's not some new drug.... it's not some obscure herbal remedy... and it's certainly not "ignoring it and hoping it will go away."
Turns out that the best approach for reducing the negative symptoms of menopause is...
...exercise!
Surprise, surprise.
So being physically active and using our bodies is not only good for staving off obesity, reducing high blood pressure, avoiding cardiovascular disease, defending against forms of cancer... not to mention giving us more energy and greater health and well-being...
...but it also helps reduce the symptoms of menopause.
Are we getting the message yet? We need to MOVE our bodies if we want to live longer, healthier and happier lives. :-)
