“Who Is To Blame For This?”
I was speaking to someone the other day who was complaining about not enjoying her well-paid, low-stress, highly respected job.
She told me that the only reason she continued working in this
job was because it paid well and, besides, she didn't know what
else to do.
If you know me by now, you can probably imagine that, at this
point, I was shaking my head in disbelief.
But then she said something that made my jaw drop.
She blamed "society" for her predicament!
Yes, she blamed "society" for making her want material things
(nice house, nice car, nice clothes, etc) which, in turn,
"forced" her to endure a job she didn't like.
No, she wasn't joking.
Now you may be surprised to discover that, after a moment's
hesitation...
I said NOTHING to challenge her on this.
I didn't admonish her for having a "victim mentality", or for
failing to take responsibility for her own life, or for not being
grateful for the many great things and opportunities she had
experienced in her life.
I didn't explain that successful people take charge of their
lives and beat to their own drum, no matter what "society" says.
I didn't tell her what a cop-out it was to blame "society"
for decisions she, and only she, had made.
And I didn't suggest that she might actually find a better job if
she climbed out of her comfort zone and tried something new.
No, I didn't bother.
I decided to TUNE OUT instead!
Sometimes...
...it's just a waste of energy trying to save people who won't
attempt to save themselves.
I'd rather spend my energy on people who, whatever challenges
they face, are actively seeking to overcome these challenges and
achieve a better life!
How about you?

“Feeling a Bit Ratty?”
February 7, 2008 marks the beginning of the Chinese year, 4706.
Each year in the Chinese calendar is symbolized by one of 12
mammals. These are the:
Rat
Ox
Tiger
Rabbit
Dragon
Snake
Horse
Sheep
Monkey
Rooster
Dog
Pig
If you're born during a year symbolized by one of these animals,
you are said to have some of the characteristics of that animal
(as defined by Chinese astrology).
According to Chinese astrology, rats - as the first sign in the
Chinese zodiac - are leaders, pioneers and conquerors. They're
supposedly charming, passionate and charismatic, as well as being
practical and hardworking. What's more, they apparently have
great leadership skills and are more organized, meticulous and
systems-oriented than any other of the 12 signs.
Guess who's a rat? ;-)
Okay, Okay... I didn't tell you their less than desirable
qualities, did I?
Maybe next time...
