“The Story Of The Coat Hanger”
Yesterday afternoon, my 2 and 4 year old daughters were playing
together upstairs.
I was preparing the evening meal and my husband was doing some
work downstairs.
As long as the girls were happy - talking, singing, laughing,
dancing and who knows what else - we were all happy.
Then my oldest came downstairs wearing her fairy wings.
Uh-oh, I thought, there's only one set of fairy wings and
typically when one daughter has something that the other
doesn't... it ends up in tears.
However, to our delight, our littlest wasn't upset at all. In
fact, she walked up to Daddy waving a coat hanger.
After a few seconds during which she gestured madly, Daddy
realized what he was expected to do: he propped the hook of the
coat hanger on the back of her top and...
Now she had fairy wings too!
Needless to say we were delighted with our 2 year old's problem
solving abilities and inventiveness!
And, after a little reflection, I think this story holds
messages for us all. Here are three (3) that come to mind:
1. Kids don't need the "latest and greatest" toys to have fun and
be happy. In fact, it's probably best if they don't have them.
Let children imagine, be creative, and come up with their own
solutions and ideas! Not only will it take the pressure off you
to give them all the latest stuff, but it will much better
prepare them for life's challenges.
2. We don't need the "latest and greatest" things either. Given
the opportunity and a little motivation, we can also arrive
at creative and less costly solutions and get the same (if not
better) results.
3. One adult's coat hanger is another child's fairy wings. If we
want to, we can enjoy the most mundane objects and situations
too... We just need to open our eyes to the beauty and
possibility in everything.
Children can really teach us something, can't they?

“Do Fasting and Detox Diets Really Work?”
According to Professor Roger Clemens and Dr Peter Pressman of the
University of Southern California, there is NO evidence that
fasting or "detox" diets remove unhealthy toxins from our bodies.
Writing in the Food Technology Journal (May 2005), Clemens and
Pressman state that the benefits claimed by people on detox diets
are attributable to improved diets, not their bodies getting rid
of excessive toxins!
Moreover, the researchers say that fasting or a restricted diet
of lots of water and some fruit and vegetables does NOT of itself
remove toxins. On the contrary, according to our current
understanding of human physiology and biochemistry, the body is
designed to "detox" itself.
Hmmm... sounds to me like "detox" diets may not work... but a
"healthy" diet will help you feel and *be* a lot better.
And what exactly is a healthy diet? Opinions vary, but my
experience and research suggests that it consists of mainly (and
a variety) of whole, unprocessed vegetables, fruits, legumes,
grains, some meat and mono-saturated fats, and as few sugary and
processed foods as possible.

“3 Tips To Avoid An Email Disaster”
If you've used email for any length of time, chances are you've
had at least one email disaster...
You know, when you just-a-bit-too-quickly hit "reply to all" or
"forward" or "send" and email a somewhat sensitive message to the
*wrong* person or people?
I personally will never forget the time when I was working as a
lawyer and sent an internal email about our client... to the
client!
Thank goodness, I followed at least one of the steps below and
made sure NOT to say anything offensive or unkind about the
client in that email.
Others haven't been so lucky.
Like a secretary who sent an email to the entire law firm poking
fun at a senior partner. (She didn't stay at the firm very long
after that...)
In fact, I recall at least one DEFAMATION case resulting from
someone offending someone else in an email sent to a large number
of people.
So email disasters really can be... DISASTERS!
Okay, so here are 3 tips to avoid an email disaster:
1. Never, ever, say anything remotely offensive, unkind or
defamatory about *anyone* in an email. You just never know who
might end up seeing your email...
2. Before you hit "send"... STOP! Check the "To" field to see
exactly who your email is going to. Is that the person (or are
they the people) you want reading this? Are they likely to
forward your email to someone you don't want reading it?
3. Also before you hit "send", scroll down the email to make sure
there's nothing there - like previous email exchanges with others
(if you are forwarding the email to someone) - that you don't
want the recipient to see.
Feel free to send this newsletter to anyone though :-)
