“How To Disagree With Someone without Making It Obvious”
Here's a nifty "trick" for disagreeing with someone without being too obvious about it or making them unnecessarily
defensive:
When you're tempted to use the word "but"... use the word "and" instead.
"But" often puts people on guard because it flags that you
disagree with all or part of what they're saying. Most people
don't like it when you disagree with them!
On the other hand, the word "and" tends not to put people on
the defensive because it indicates agreement. Yet, you can
say "and"... and still disagree with them!
Which may enable you to disagree with someone without
raising their hackles.
Compare the probable impact of the following responses:
Statement: "There's absolutely no question that the sun revolves around the Earth."
Old response: "I understand your view but I believe the Earth revolves around the sun"
New response: "I understand your view and I believe the the Earth revolves around the sun."
Another example:
Statement: "The results clearly show that this project was an absolute failure."
Old response: "But what about the increase in sales in the
last quarter?"
New response: "Yes, and the bright spot is the increase in sales in the last quarter."
Now, using "and" won't always be appropriate... and sometimes
you'll want to make it obvious that you disagree with something.
In cases where it is appropriate, and you want to be subtle
about your disagreement, however, simply replacing the word
"but" with "and" and restructuring your response accordingly,
may make for a more positive discussion overall.
