“Why My 5 yr old Doesn't Like Mondays”
Over the past few weeks, my 5 year old has repeatedly told me that she doesn't like Mondays.
After asking her why, I was relieved to hear that it wasn't because she didn't like going to school. Learning is something we want to be fun for our children... because it SHOULD be fun! And if it's not fun at age 5... something is seriously wrong.
The reason, however, was that our daughter didn't like a particular activity she does each Monday morning at school. It's called "On The Weekend" and requires the class to write a sentence describing what they did on the weekend. In our daughter's case, she didn't like this activity - and in turn, Mondays - because she found it hard and (like everyone in the class) tended to make mistakes.
And it was this - a negative feeling about making mistakes - that was putting our 5 year old off Mondays.
Oh great, my 5 year old is a perfectionist!
As funny as this may seem, I wonder how many of us are turned off things because we dislike or fear making mistakes. Whether it's entire days of the week or other experiences.
And, without parents to take us to school whether we like it or not, I wonder how many of us simply don't do things because we don't want to experience that uncomfortable feeling of getting it wrong.
Yet, while it's understandable not to enjoy messing up, there really is no upside to being afraid of making mistakes. Not if it prevents us from learning and accomplishing new things.
So what do I recommend to overcome such a fear? Well, in the case of our 5 year old, we are:
1. Aiming to instill an understanding that "having a go" and doing her best is what is important... not being perfect. And that making mistakes is necessary, since it's how we learn.
2. Helping her to take positive steps towards making fewer mistakes by practising her "On The Weekend" sentence during the weekend.
This, essentially, is what I recommend for you, myself and everyone who is afraid of doing something for fear of making mistakes: (1) aim to do your best, but realise that making mistakes is okay and a necessary part of learning, and (2) practise and prepare - and generally do what you can - to avoid making mistakes.
You may wonder whether aiming to avoid mistakes contradicts the idea that making mistakes is okay. Well, I actually think that making mistakes is only acceptable WITHIN THE CONTEXT of trying to do your best.
Making mistakes because you just don't give a toss is NOT okay... that's just lazy and hardly the recipe for success. Nor is taking the "soft option" - i.e. doing something that's easy just because you know you can do it - rather than challenging yourself to do something that's difficult. By definition, doing something that we know we can do is NOT learning! We only grow when we push ourselves beyond our comfort zone.
Of course, it takes time to change how you feel about making mistakes. As young as my 5 year old is, she's had enough time to cultivate a rather stong will, so I know my husband and I have our work cut out for us. Assuming you're a bit older than her (!) that's even more reason for you to BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF :-)

“Raw Food Diets - Are They Really More Nutritious?”
Raw food diets have become popular in recent years. Basically, these are diets in which most or all foods consumed are eaten fresh or raw rather than cooked.
One of the main reasons for eating raw food is the belief that leaving a given food uncooked preserves its natural enzymes, which supposedly helps you better digest the food without straining your digestion system. Raw food advocates argue that cooking destroys such enzymes, making such food harder to digest.
Well, according to ABC Science's intrepid science authority and myth buster Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, it's not as simple as that. Cooking can actually make it EASIER to digest foods!
In scientific terms, heating a food makes it more digestible in a number of ways. Firstly, cooking breaks down thick, husky, indigestible molecules into digestible food content. Secondly, it destroys toxins, chemicals and harmful bacteria.
Of course, another argument in favor of consuming raw foods is to preserve their vitamin content. For example, cooking vegetables is known to reduce their Vitamin C content. According to Dr Karl, however, certain studies have shown that cooking vegetables actually helps release their antioxidant content.
So while it may be a good idea to eat some foods (e.g. fruit and some vegetables) raw, it may also be a good idea to cook certain other foods (e.g. potatoes).
But here's the most worrying news for stringent raw foodists. According to Dr Karl, studies on raw foodists have consistently found such individuals to be undernourished, with reduced bone mass (making them more susceptible to osteoporosis) and deficiencies in key nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, vitamin D and vitamin A.
Further, about half of all women who follow a raw food diet get so malnourished they stop having periods (making it impossible for them to conceive children until they begin menstruating again).
So, all in all, you're probably well-advised to think twice before giving up cooking... or at least giving up eating cooked foods!
