“The OTHER Myth About Job Security”

Most people agree that "job security" - i.e. the idea that you'll be guaranteed a job for life with a given employer is a myth.

But there's ANOTHER myth underlying this that we don't hear so much about. It's the myth that there ever was or could be job security in the first place.

Think about it. How can anyone guarantee someone else a job for life? And how could we ever expect someone to give us a guaranteed job for life? There just aren't any guarantees in life. And companies - being run by fallible human beings just like us - are in no better position to ensure job security than we are to ensure that our kids never get hurt.

Sure, we can and should take precautions... but there are no guarantees.

Moreover, what shocks me most is when companies do stupid things - things that send them into financial distress - and people still expect job security. Or when companies merge with other companies, and some people assume they will automatically keep their jobs. What the?

Sure, it might be unfair to lose your job in those circumstances... but isn't it logical? Isn't it logical that if a company goes under, people will lose their jobs? Isn't it one of the prime motivations for a company merging with another company to achieve "synergies" by halving the combined workforce?

The real myth about job security is that there ever was job security.

So what does this mean for YOU?

1. It probably confirms what you always suspected: that, rhetoric aside, no one can provide any guarantees that your job is safe; and

2. Be alert to what your company is doing. Is it wasting money? Is it merging with another company? Be alert to signs of impending change and prepare yourself accordingly. Whether it's preparing yourself to jump ship, or preparing yourself to fight for your job.

To bring this home, let me mention the little story of Ansett. Ansett was for many, many years the second major airline carrier in Australia. It was an Australian icon and employed about 16,000 people. Ansett was also the major sponsor of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

A year later, the company collapsed.

As you might imagine, many people in Australia were stunned by Ansett's collapse, not to mention the 16,000 people who lost their jobs. But those inside the company - including my husband who worked there until a year or so before the company went bust - will tell you that, for some time, the writing was on the wall.

A similar story could probably be told about Bear Stearns, a major US investment bank that practically went under until its purchase by J.P. Morgan a month or so ago.

So let's not delude ourselves. Let's be alert to what is going on around us and take proactive steps to protect ourselves and our families.

“The ONE Thing You MUST Do To Overcome Bad Habits”

Some people exhort the benefits of changing how you think in order to overcome bad habits.

I agree that working on your mind is integral to taking you forward in the direction you want - whether it's overcoming bad habits or achieving new goals.

But do you need to change your mind to change your behavior? Or do you need to change your behavior to change your mind?

I suspect both, but in my experience, a change of behavior is the one thing that MUST COME FIRST. This is for two reasons:

1. You need to "stop the blood loss" - in other words, you need to take measures to immediately inhibit further bad behavior.

This may mean removing certain "temptations" to engage in the bad habit. For example, want to stop eating junk? Clear the junk food out of your kitchen.

Want to get out of credit card debt? Pay off your cards, then cut them up.

Want to overcome a serious addiction like alcoholism? Get rid of the alcohol and don't drive near your regular haunts.

2. By changing your behavior you'll automatically start living differently which, accordingly, will inspire you to think differently.

For instance, if you drive a different way home from work (because, for example, you want to avoid driving past a certain bar)... you'll pass different scenery... which in turn will inspire different thoughts.

By behaving differently, you'll start thinking differently which, in turn, will help lay the foundation for changing how you think in relation to that bad habit you want to overcome.
