“An Aussie Who Loves Thanksgiving”

Actually, being based in Australia - where we don't have a Thanksgiving Day - I know very little about the United States'

Thanksgiving celebration, but I did glean a few facts about it which I've published in Fast Facts below.

What I love about it - or at least my concept of what it is - is the idea of focusing an entire day on being thankful. A day where, for 24 hours, you have an excuse - even an expectation - to put all your worries aside and focus on what you are grateful for in your life.

I can only imagine that if people really did this - they literally spent the day thinking and sharing what they were thankful for, the positive feelings this would create would linger for days to come.

Why? Because a funny thing happens when you think about what you're grateful for: you INSTANTLY become happier.

No kidding. When you put your attention on something - even the most minor thing in the midst of a catastrophe - your mind instantly shifts into a more positive mode and you feel (even slightly) happier.

Whether or not you are from the U.S. I would encourage you to think 'thankful thoughts' this Thursday. I will too!

“How To Understand Complex Information”

Trust me, as a lawyer, I've been given my fair share of complex, almost indecipherable information to evaluate! And given that we're all in the ‘Information Age', I you probably get landed with your fair share of complex information too!

So... here are some steps for digesting and understanding hard-to-decipher information:

1. Identify what you need to know. You mightn't need to wade through all the piles of information you've been given – you may be able to get the answer you seek in just one part of the materials.

2. Find out the context and/or underlying purpose of the information you've been given. For example, speak to the person who provided the information and get them to explain to you, in simple terms, what it all means. If you find diagrams helpful, ask them to depict the information in the form of a diagram.

3. Do a quick read-through to get the general gist. Then read through each relevant part of the information slowly and transcribe or make notes as to what you think the information means. Consider drawing a diagram to clarify your understanding.

4. Get a second opinion. If you still doubt your understanding ask someone else to take a look at the information and give you their view.

5. If relevant, go back to the person who gave you the information and tell them what your understanding is, so they can confirm or correct your thinking.

“Facts About Thanksgiving Day”

You may be familiar with the idea that kids learn languages faster than adults. Nothing could be further than the truth.

Contrary to legend, the U.S. Thanksgiving Day celebration is not based on a single event. It's an invented tradition based on both the New England puritan Thanksgiving - a religious Thanksgiving - and the traditional harvest celebrations of England and New England.

Most believe that the first Thanksgiving took place in Plymouth Colony, in present-day Massachusetts, in 1621. Around 200 years later, President Abraham Lincoln declared the final Thursday in November as a national day of thanksgiving. Congress made Thanksgiving Day an official national holiday in 1941.

Nowadays, the tradition is marked by families getting together to express their thanks and sharing a turkey roast lunch.
