“How To Survive and Thrive During a Recession”

Seems like most of the developed world is either in, or about to go into, a recession.

That means lower economic growth, translating into lower demand for goods and services, lower asset values, and job cuts, among other things.

So how do we survive and thrive during a recession?

In my view, the first thing to do is be realistic. Not overly pessimistic or optimistic, but realistic.

Ask many economists and they'll tell you that a recession is a natural correction after a period of high economic growth.

It's certainly not pleasant for many of us... but it shouldn't really be a surprise.

By the same token, you should ignore those who say we'll be in recession forever. The world's economies won't necessarily be the same, but they will grow again.

For the average person or business, a recession often forces you to take stock of your lifestyle (including your spending habits) and values. That's probably a good thing.

So how do you survive and thrive during a recession?

Well, after taking stock of your situation and taking whatever hard decisions need to be made (if they need to be made), the next step is to open your eyes to the opportunities presented by an economic downturn.

Recessions are, for example, often great times to develop new skills and start businesses.

Not necessarily businesses that rely on raising outside capital or bank loans (the banks are not lending much these days). But certainly businesses that can be self-funded and that don't actually require much funding.

Why is it such a good time to start a business right now?

  • Less competition, due to companies going out of business or 'fair weather' entrepreneurs deciding against starting a business.
  • More talent available in the way of employees, contractors and freelancers, due to layoffs and the scarcity of jobs.
  • Lower costs, due to lower demand for goods and services placing downward pressure on prices.

So if you've ever considered starting a business and are scared of doing so because of the recession... think again.

While I wouldn't recommend quitting your job (if you still have one!), I would recommend starting a simple business on the side that you can gradually build over time.

(With Almost NO Expense)”

If you could start your own online business, in just a week or two, with almost no expense to get started...

Would you do it?

If you said yes, I've got some good news for you...

Yes, you really can get your own Internet business started in just a few weeks. It's a lot simpler than you might think.

But I'm not talking about shady 'get rich quick' schemes or questionable biz-opps or low-paying 'work at home' plans.

And I'm not talking about selling other people's products through drop-shipping or affiliate programs.

“A Quick Tip For Remembering People's Names”

Years ago I read a book that contained a simple trick for remembering people's names.

I won't say I use this trick religiously, but when I do use it, it works like a charm.

Here's how it works. When someone tells you their name (or you are introduced to someone) you instantly make some kind of visual or aural association between the person's name and something you're likely to remember.

For example, if you meet a guy called Pat and he happens to be wearing a hat you might create a little song inside your head with a lyric such as 'Pat, pat, wears a hat. Pat, pat, wears a hat.'

Or if you meet a woman called Rose, and she is holding an umbrella, you might create a mental image of Rose holding an umbrella in the shape of a giant rose.

In fact, the more absurd the mental picture or song, the more likely you'll remember the person's name when you next see them.

Try it!

...And You Can Too!”

Studies show that 50% of all new jobs go to "Insiders"...

Not just existing employees, but people who BECOME insiders by taking a somewhat different - yet much more effective - approach to getting the job they want.

Despite this, most books, career counselors and recruiters keep telling us to apply for a job using the conventional, "Outsider" approach!

Fine... if you want to join the long queue of people waiting to get in the "front door."

But if you want to slip in the "side door"... and not settle for any old job... but land the job you REALLY want, here's how:

“Which Came First - The Fruit or The Color?”

My daughter asked me an interesting question earlier this week. She asked me whether the name 'orange' came from the fruit... or whether the fruit was named after the color.

In turn, I posed this question to some friends and one of them kindly found the answer on... you guessed it... Wikipedia.

It turns out that the word 'orange' is, in fact, named after the orange fruit, and derives from the Sanskrit word naranja.

In old English the color was known as 'geoluhread' which, in Modern English, translates into 'yellow-red.'
