Quiz: Are You Assertive Enough?

Here's a quick quiz to help you identify whether or not you are assertive enough in terms of achieving business and/or career goals. I use business and career examples interchangeably, but just imagine yourself in either scenario.

Select the response that best reflects what you would do given only the three choices available for each question. Please answer each question or the quiz won't work correctly. Once you've completed each answer, click "Are You Assertive Enough?" to find out your score... and what it means...


1. You are performing well in your current job but eager to be promoted and take on new challenges. Your boss quits, leaving his job open. Do you:

Hope that you will be considered for the role and wait to be asked to apply for the job?
Immediately contact your ex-boss's boss and tell her that you are able to the job, want the job, and... when do you start?
Drop subtle hints to your ex-boss's boss that you would be ideal for the role?

 

2. You have just started a new business offering management consulting services. Although you are confident in your abilities, you are new to the business and have no track record to speak of. You discover that an associate of a friend is looking for a company to provide services similar to those you provide but on a much bigger, more challenging scale. Do you:

Mention to your friend that you provide similar services and that their associate may contact you if interested?
Ask your friend for both a recommendation and the contact details of their associate so you can contact and pitch your services to them?
Ignore the opportunity and pursue smaller, easier projects?

 

3. Your manager is planning to restructure your department. You're not clear what will be the outcome but your role may be changed or eliminated, another role may or may not be made available, and the new role may or may not be preferable to what you're currently doing. Do you:

Tell your boss what you'd like to do if the opportunity comes up?
Wait and see what happens?
Give your boss your recommendations for how you could best be utilized in any new structure?

 

4. A client you have been working for has asked you to give a quote on a large piece of work. You have been working for this client for a while now, and have found the work to be voluminous, exhausting and of low value. It's low paid and, when you stop to think about it, you realize that it's keeping you from pursuing higher value, more interesting work. Do you:

Give the client a quote based on the previous, discounted charges you've quoted in the past?
Give the client a quote based on higher fees?
Let the client know that you don't wish to quote as you are focusing on doing more high-value work?

 

5. Your boss is a bully who constantly demeans you and the other members of your team. Do you:

Discuss with the others in the team and agree that someone else should stand up to the boss on the team's behalf?
Accept that this is just the way your boss is and be happy just to have a job?
Confront your boss and let them know that the way they are treating you and the team is unacceptable and unlawful and that you're prepared to take further action unless the bullying stops?

 

6. You discover that a competitor has been bad-mouthing you to their clients and prospects. You actually have written evidence of them defaming you and your business. Do you:

Ignore it and accept that some competitors will stoop to dirty tricks?
Make a point to correct anyone who repeats the competitor's claims?
Get your attorney to send your competitor a letter warning them to stop or they'll face a lawsuit?

 

7. A new person joins your team. You're not sure what they're going to do but it seems suspiciously like they'll be taking over some of the work you enjoy and wish to continue doing. Do you:

Do what you can to find out about the new person and what their new role may be?
Complain to your boss and bad-mouth the new person?
Meet with the new person, ask what they're planning to do, and see if there's an opportunity for you to leverage off them to get what you want?
