“How To Be Happy - My No.1 Tip”

I was recently asked for my No.1 tip on how to be happy.

My answer was to be published along with a number of other tips, so I wanted it to be meaningful... and also a little original.

Well, it turns out that I had already given my No.1 tip in this newsletter... although I hadn't really emphasized it as being my "No.1 tip on how to be happy".

And it may not be what you think, since I haven't seen anyone else talk about this (although I don't proclaim to be a huge reader of - let alone expert on - self-improvement literature.)

So what is it?

It's to choose the best possible "life metaphor".

Your "life metaphor" is how you picture, or think about, life.

In other words, when you think about life - and, specifically, YOUR life - what imagery comes to mind? What metaphor do you think of?

Do you see life as... a battle?

As a race?

As some kind of contest or competition?

Or do you see life as, say, a walk through a gorgeous, tranquil garden?

Where there's no pressure to finish ahead of anyone else, or to finish by a certain time, or to finish at all. Where you're surrounded by abundance, harmony and LIFE in all its splendor. Where there's still work involved and results to achieve... and the occasional stumble... but no pressure to BEAT others to accomplish those results.

So what IS your life metaphor? And is it serving or limiting you?

If it's not serving you... can you devise a better metaphor?

I truly believe that how you see life impacts tremendously on the quality of your life, and ultimately, your happiness.

I can almost guarantee that if you switch your metaphor from, say, a "contest" where you must struggle to achieve your goals... to a picture of accomplishment without stress... you WILL be happier.

Not that changing your life metaphor will necessarily be easy. It may, in fact, require a degree of soul searching and mental "re-engineering".

But the rewards will truly be worth the effort. In terms of impacting your life, it may be the most profound thing you do.

“Which is Best - Raw or Cooked Vegies?”

The answer is... both!

Raw vegetables retain more of their nutrients. Heating tends to destroy B-vitamins, enzymes (which help you digest food), indoles (cancer-fighting nutrients), and heat-sensitive thiamine and vitamin C.

Having said that, you may be better off eating some vegetables cooked. Not only do vitamins A, D, E and K remain when vegetables are cooked, but some nutrients, like beta carotene, become more bio-available when heated.

Cooking can also make food more digestible - for example, cooked yams and potatoes are much more digestible than their raw counterparts.

And, let's face it, there are some delicious cooked vegetable dishes!

So... do consider eating more raw vegies... but, in general, just eat lots of vegetables.

After all, while diet "experts" argue about the relative benefits of high protein, low-fat, low-GI, low-cal and all manner of other diets... very few question the value of vegetables, which are rich in vitamins, minerals, anti oxidants and other nutrients.

“Looking for a New Job?”

Well, don't be surprised if you find it a little tough to get the job you want.

That's basically because 50% of all new jobs go to "Insiders"... people who take a different - and much more effective - approach to getting the job they want.

Yet all the books, career counselors and recruiters tell us to apply for a job using the conventional "Outsider" approach!

No wonder getting a job is so hard.

Well it doesn't have to be... and it's NOT. Not when YOU discover and apply the Insider approach to getting a job.

“Can Anti-Oxidants Combat Infertility?”

According to Laureate Professor John Aitken, a reproductive biologist at the University of Newcastle in Australia, DNA damage in sperm is the single biggest cause of human infertility.

Professor Aitken and his team have been studying DNA damage in sperm over the last decade and believe free radicals are to blame.

Free radicals are chemicals created by cells in our bodies. They're normally disposed of by anti-oxidants. However, an unhealthy lifestyle - for example, smoking - can increase a person's free radical levels.

In the case of sperm DNA, the free radicals attack the outer membrane of the sperm, which prevents it from fusing with the egg to bring about fertilization.

The good news is that anti-oxidant supplementation may be a way to block a free radical attack.

In fact, early trials have shown that taking an anti-oxidant supplement can be enough to produce healthy sperm sufficient for a couple to conceive.

It's too early to jump to conclusions, but the early signs are positive.

In any case, given the general harm caused by free radicals - and the benefits of anti-oxidants - it's probably a good idea to ensure your diet is full of anti-oxidant rich food.

Great sources of anti-oxidants are:

  • Vitamin C - found in citrus fruits, green peppers, broccoli, green leafy vegetables, strawberries, raw cabbage and potatoes;
  • Vitamin E - found in wheat germ, nuts, seeds, whole grains, green leafy vegetables, vegetable oil and fish-liver oil;
  • Beta carotene - found in carrots, squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, kale, collards, cantaloupe, peaches and apricots; and
  • Selenium - found in fish, shellfish, red meat, grains, eggs, chicken, garlic and vegetables can also be a good source if grown in selenium-rich soils).
